Gramma's Mysterious Robin
Gramma's Mysterious Robin

I have a pet rooster who is incredibly spoiled that sleeps in my room at night. His name is Buttercup. He usually sits on his perch by the window to watch the sun come up.
Buttercup crows at 9:00 every morning, (as per his training). He comes when I call him and clearly says his name in consonants. "Buttercup=uuueeerrruuuuhhh"!! He also lets me know when there are visitors, or trouble of any kind. Buttercup has an unusual way of waking me up if he thinks that something is important. He climbs on my chest and grabs my eyelid with his beak and plucks it open then he jumps off and he waits...watching me.
f course, this action gets my immediate arousal. I am wide awake now and wondering, "What is going on?". He must do it quite precisely because it does not even leave a mark on my eye! He was standing by the bedroom door when I sat up. I did not move right away and I just sat there blinking and trying to look at him.. He began to pace back and forth from my bed to my door while he crowed.
The crow sounded alot like a infant crying.
"Waah!, Waah!".
"Okay..Okay, I am coming", I said.
I got up and followed him. His persistence persuaded me.
I thought to myself, "There must be something wrong."
I went to the living room and noticed the girls, ( a couple of spoiled rotten, hens), were sitting in the living room, staring out the window where my desk sits. Buttercup jumped on the back of the chair..and crowed while poking his head toward the window.
Most mornings, I just stand by my coffee-pot, staring out the kitchen window at the sparrows that eat bird food, by my pecan tree.
I am usually in a complete stupor until I can get some coffee in me and liven up! This morning proved to be different. Buttercup and the hens fussed loudly. They wanted me to look out the living room window. So I did. I live in a small town in Texas...(yes there are some chickens that roam freely in and out of my house). Yes I may be a bit eccentric..but the way the chickens were acting was even strange to me.
There among the sparrows, by the tree, standing in the grass. holding perfectly still was the largest Robin I have ever seen. I grew up in Wisconsin where Robins were quite common but one is rarely seen where I live now. As I stared at this huge Robin...she dissappeared! I grabbed my glasses off the desk...and looked again...she returned but had not moved. As I stared in disbelief...she was gone..only a slight shadow of her outline remained.
I forgot about the coffee. I was immediatly reminded of something my Gramma used to say before she passed and everyspring while I was growing up.
She said "When you see the Robin redbreast..spring is here!"
I have always looked for the Robin red breast every spring ever since. I moved to this town 25 years ago and every spring,
I see one fat Robin red breast..only for a few seconds..and it always reminds me of my Gramma.
Even though the calander may say spring will not be here for several weeks yet..I know that Gramma's Robin never fails to show up. I know that it couldn't be the same Robin, it just seems like it is.

Memory Verse
Behold the fowls of the air; for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? St. Matt. 6:26
