A narrative essay is a story which many instructors require their students to do. Recently many blog and website writers are now using or starting to use this same technique. A narrative essay can be personal, based on experiences you have had, or can be based on personal accounts rather than actual facts. You will need to decide on a topic for your essay. Then you will need to include all parts of the story which means deciding on a plot, characters, the setting in which it happens, then bring the story to a climax, include a point to the story, and finally bring it back down to the conclusion to end the story.
"When would a narrative essay not be written as a story?
A good example of this is when an instructor asks a student to write a book report. Obviously, this would not necessarily follow the pattern of a story and would focus on providing an informative narrative for the reader" (Lab, P. 2019). See basic narrative essay guidelines below.

Basic Narrative Essay Guidelines
1. Action: Provide details about any movement or action.
2. Conflict: Provide details about any conflict, challenge or difference in opinion
3. Resolution: Solving the problem, overcoming a challenge. Resolve the conflict one way or another. (The problem is solved, or the challenge is overcome. Sometimes, the resolution might be that the narrator has failed to solve the problem or overcome the challenge. The conflict must be resolved one way or the other.)
4. Consistent Point-of-View: (Use first person or third person -- I or he/she -- not both. A first person narrative would be you, the writer, telling a story that happened to you. A third person narrative would be you telling a story that happened to someone else.)5. Description (Set the scene to make the story come alive for your readers. Use some of the five senses or figurative language.)
5. Dialogue: Quote what people actually said, (be sure to create a reference and use an in-text citation to refer to the reference). Providing dialogue makes for a more vivid story than simply summarizing what was said. Dialogue reveals character and gives the essay strength and makes it more creditable to the readers.
