How to Create a Best Selling Novel
- Have a general idea of what your story line will be.
- Create a list of characters (people or animals for instance) who will play a role in your book.
- Get your reader involved by describing movement and letting your character's speak instead of you being the narrator telling a story
- Describe action by showing rather than telling
- Describe your characters and make them come to life in your reader's minds by including details of their appearance, demeanor, and actions.
- Describe the place where the story is taking place.
- Weaving historical facts about the person, place, or things into your story line makes your story more believable, keeps your reader interested, and helps to prevent writer's block.
- Create an outline of events which you will have in your writings.
- Include which character's you will use in each part of the story in your outline.
- Research the time in history of your story so that your descriptions will be accurate and also to make it more realistic by describing items in a room which were popular during a particular era.
- Details are important but be careful not to include so many details that your reader loses track of the events that are happening in your story.
- Write each event and put them in the correct sequence then write to show your reader how the events connect the events together in the lives of your characters.
“Not into outlining? Then someone did not demonstrate it for you the way Weiland has in her book. If you can make a quick trip grocery list, you can outline your next manuscript to benefit your process, using Weiland’s guide.”—Leslie Hultgren
